# 1.2 - We constantly run mental simulations
Source: #books/decisive

The mind constantly runs simulations—replaying past situations, rehearsing future scenarios, thinking through relationships and consequences. The more emotion attached, the more mental energy consumed.

**When controlled:** Mental simulation becomes preparation. Imagining worst-case scenarios acts like a mental vaccination—we practice responses and reduce surprise when challenges arise.

**When it runs wild:** The mind takes control, jerking us into overthinking patterns. We can't sleep, can't concentrate. Instead of living in the present, we're stuck reviewing the past or anxiously preparing for every possible future problem.

**The solution:** Meditation helps regain control over the simulation process, bringing awareness back to the present moment.
